Between Salt and Structure: A Cultural Translation of Olives

Dagelia is a brand and packaging system built around a cultural translation tension: a Mediterranean product entering a Northern European context.

Olives — particularly strong, salty black olives — carry a different cultural position in Mediterranean everyday life than they do in Sweden, where they exist slightly outside habitual consumption.Rather than resolving this distance, Dagelia uses it as a design strategy.

Context

The project starts from a simple but overlooked condition: the same product can feel ordinary in one geography and slightly unfamiliar in another.Dagelia is built in that in-between state — recognition without habit, familiarity without emotional attachment.Instead of repositioning the product through simplification, the brand accepts this ambiguity as its foundation.

Strategy

Dagelia operates on a non-resolution strategy.Cultural difference is not reduced, but maintained as a structural element of the brand. This positions Dagelia away from typical FMCG logic, where clarity and immediate appeal are prioritized, and instead allows for a slower, more uncertain form of recognition.

Visual System

The identity is built on a structured system that ensures consistency across applications. Within this system, controlled disruptions appear through symbolic elements. One of these is the seagull. The seagull functions as more than an illustration. It introduces a specific attitude into the system loud, coastal, slightly intrusive, and impossible to ignore. It carries associations of salt, sea, and friction, aligning with the product’s sensory and geographical references.

Rather than softening the system, it interrupts it at intentional points, creating moments of instability within an otherwise controlled layout.Typography remains restrained and functional, reinforcing the structural layer of the identity. The result is a system that balances order with deliberate disturbance.

Positioning

Outcome Dagelia sits between categories: culturally specific, but geographically displaced structured, but intentionally unstable familiar in origin, but slightly foreign in context Instead of removing friction, the system preserves it as part of the brand identity.
